Census Designated Places in the Eastern Panhandle
Census Designated Places are areas within a town or citiy where enough people have gathered and put down roots. These places don't have a post office, so they can't be deemed a true town or city. There are a handfull of these places amongst the three counties that make up the Eastern Panhandle. Some of which were granted their own zip code, like Shenandoah Junction.
The majority of these CDP's are in more rurual areas, but not too far from the larger cities and towns like Charles Town, Martinsburg, the Inwood/Bunker Hill area, and even Virginia. Census Designated Places offer ultra-local living with their own sayings, food stops, niche activities, and more.
Shenandoah Junction
Shanendoah Junction offers a lot for a Census Designated Place! You will find Jefferson High School, Wildwood Middle School, a recreation center (Sam Michaels), and even a commuter train station. The Junction, as you will hear locals call it, is located between Charles Town and Shepherdstown. You can easily jutt off and end up in Kearneysville, Martinsburg, or Harpers Ferry depending on your destination.
Shannondale
Shannondale is a massive housing community in Harpers Ferry that resides on a mountian. The community is a mixed bag of sorts when it comes down to home types. They range from larger, bew colonials, to homes dating back in the 80's. The vastness of the community could easily get you turned around while on the mountian. If you ever find yourself at the tippy top of the mountain, the view will be worth it!
There is also the option to join the Mountain Lake Club on Lake Shannondale. This lake offers boating (non-motored, and motored), catch and release fishing, beach access, and dinner at the Lakeside Bar and Grill. Membership fees range from individual, family, and senior rates. Residents of Berkeley or Jefferson counties will get a $25 credit upon applying.
Middleway
This area rests between Kearneysville and Bunker Hill. Even though it is small in stature, the residents still put on a festival each year for the town called Middleway Days. Middleway has some homes, farmland, a church, an auto repair shop, and is a direct link to Virginia. Nearby, there is a local made-to-order food shop and convienece store and a Dollar General store.
